Some pets live in the house.

And then there are pets like Kiki, who behave as if the house was built especially for them—and the humans were added later for their convenience.

Meet Kiki.

Small, black, adorable, curious, and apparently extremely busy.

Just look at that face in the photograph. Kiki is bent down with complete concentration, nose almost touching the floor, as if she has discovered the greatest mystery of the century.

What is she investigating?

A smell?

A tiny crumb?

Something invisible to human eyes?

Nobody knows.

But one thing is certain:

Kiki has an investigation going on. Please do not disturb.

Kiki’s Most Unique Trait: Curiosity

If I had to describe Kiki in one word, it would be curious.

Kiki doesn’t simply walk into a room.

She inspects it.

She doesn’t see a new object.

She sees a potential mystery.

A plastic bag lying on the floor?

Investigation.

A new pair of slippers?

Investigation.

Something moving behind the curtain?

Code Red!

A tiny sound from underneath the sofa?

Forget everything else.

Kiki is now officially on duty.

And she takes her responsibilities very seriously.

Kiki and the Great Floor Mystery

The photograph captures Kiki perfectly.

Head down.

Nose working overtime.

Eyes focused.

Body ready for action.

She looks like a detective who has just arrived at a crime scene.

Perhaps Kiki is thinking:

“Hmm… something happened here.”

Sniff.

“Definitely suspicious.”

Another sniff.

“I knew it!”

And then, after five minutes of intensive investigation, Kiki may suddenly decide that the mystery is no longer important.

She gets up…

looks around…

and runs away.

Case closed.

No report.

No explanation.

No press conference.

Just Kiki.

The Nose Knows

For Kiki, the world is apparently divided into two categories:

Things worth sniffing

and

things that have not yet been sniffed.

Humans enter a room and notice furniture, curtains and people.

Kiki enters the room and probably receives an entire intelligence report.

“Someone ate something here.”

“Someone walked past this place.”

“Something is interesting behind that chair.”

“And I am 97% certain there is food somewhere nearby.”

That last piece of information is, naturally, the most important.

Kiki Has Selective Hearing

Like many pets, Kiki seems to have developed a very advanced form of selective hearing.

“Kiki, come here.”

Silence.

“Kiki!”

Nothing.

“Kiki, where are you?”

Still nothing.

“Kiki… treat?”

Suddenly—

Kiki has entered the room.

The transformation is astonishing.

One second she is nowhere to be found.

The next second she is standing in front of you with the expression:

“You called?”

And you know perfectly well that she heard you the first three times.

She just didn’t consider them important.

The House Belongs to Kiki

Every pet eventually establishes its own rules.

Kiki’s rules are probably quite simple:

Rule No. 1: Everything on the floor belongs to Kiki.

Rule No. 2: Every interesting smell must be investigated.

Rule No. 3: Humans may sit wherever they want—provided Kiki approves.

Rule No. 4: Treats must be provided immediately.

Rule No. 5: If nobody is paying attention to Kiki, create a situation that requires immediate attention.

This last rule is particularly useful.

A little noise.

A suspicious movement.

Perhaps a stolen sock.

Suddenly everyone is looking at Kiki.

Mission accomplished.

But That’s What Makes Kiki Special

Of course, Kiki’s curiosity is funny.

Her little investigations are entertaining.

Her mischief probably keeps everyone busy.

But there is something much more special about having a pet.

They become part of the family.

Kiki doesn’t need to say anything.

She doesn’t need to understand human conversations.

She doesn’t need to know what happened during the day.

Her presence itself changes the atmosphere of the house.

A quiet afternoon becomes more lively.

A boring moment becomes funny.

And an ordinary day suddenly has a story.

Years from now, people may forget what they were doing on a particular afternoon.

But they may remember:

“Remember Kiki? She used to sniff the floor for absolutely no reason!”

And everyone will laugh.

Every Pet Has a Kiki Moment

That’s what makes pets so wonderful.

Every pet has something that makes them uniquely themselves.

For Kiki, it is that irresistible curiosity—the need to investigate absolutely everything.

Perhaps your pet has a completely different personality.

Maybe your dog thinks he’s the family’s security officer.

Maybe your cat behaves like the owner of a five-star hotel.

Maybe your parrot believes he is the family’s chief commentator.
